What I'd recommend is to, if you know someone else who's got a drive that works, is hook it up to your computer and see if it works. If you replace your optical drive, of course you may need to change something for the computer to use different driver for a different model, perhaps even a firmware difference.

In Windows, search for and open regedit. We've contacted memorex but they want to know exactly how many discs had errors so they can "refund them" and now i'm wondering if they're only gonna replace the errored disc I just removed all the burning software and other related associates and install just one and it did the trick.
