This is how I solved it in my case: Hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to open a virtual terminal. With gdm I had error messages in ~/.cache/gdm/session.log with entries such as /etc/gdm/Xsession: line 33: mktemp: command not found and after sudo aptitude purge gdm with lightdm I got several similar I can't login on my new phone using the correct credentials.
