I used a program called boot-repair for ubuntu that does that. So if you don't care, go ahead with the install. I've had Windows installations that were not repairable and that sounds like the same issue for you. On the software side, anything that damages or changes essential system files can have the same effect, including viruses, improper shutdowns due to a crash or power outage.
